What to do about a broken denture

The American Dental Association estimates that at least 90% of people suffering from tooth loss own dentures. For dementia patients and their caregivers, broken dentures can be a worst-case scenario. Depending on the type of damage, your dentures may or may not be able to be repaired. Here’s how to tell if your denture can be repaired.

Can The Dentures Be Repaired?

Scenario #1: The Denture is in Multiple Pieces

If the denture is fragmented into multiple pieces, it may be able to be repaired if you do not lose any of the parts. Collect the pieces and place them in a clean container as soon as the break happens. Call Geriatric House Call Dentistry as soon as possible to get them repaired. Never glue the denture back together yourself. If you glue the denture, it can’t be repaired, and you will have to have the dentures replaced.

Scenario #2: There is a Build Up of Dirt and Rocks on the Denture

If your loved one’s dentures look rocky or dirty, they are likely caked with calcium deposits. This repair is nothing to worry over at all. All you have to do is call Geriatric House Call Dentistry. We will come to the patient’s home and remove the calcium deposits on site.

Scenario #3: The Inside of the Denture is Deteriorating or Peeling

This is a common problem for patients who have had their dentures readjusted. Patients who have lost weight may need their dentures relined if they become loose. The reline substance used to make the dentures fit properly will begin to peel over time. Reline typically only lasts a year or two. If the dentures are peeling, it means they are due for another reline.
